Engagement rate calculator

Type the numbers your own dashboard already shows you. This divides them three ways and stops there: no benchmark, no "good" threshold, nothing we do not actually have.

Likes, comments, shares and saves added together, from the post you are measuring.

Accounts that saw the post at least once.

The account size at the time of the post.

Total views, including a person who saw it twice.

Engagement rate, three ways

By reach

By followers

By impressions

There is no universal good rate to compare against. It depends on platform, format, audience size and industry, and any single number offered as a benchmark is a guess dressed up as data.

Why three denominators, not one

Reach, followers and impressions answer different questions. Rate by reach tells you how the people who actually saw the post responded. Rate by followers tells you what share of your audience engaged, whether or not the post reached everyone. Rate by impressions counts every view, including repeats. Comparing a rate calculated one way against a rate calculated another way is a common source of an engagement number that looks wrong.

Questions

What is the actual formula?

Interactions divided by the denominator you pick, shown as a percentage. Interactions here means likes, comments, shares and saves added together; some platforms report these separately, in which case add them yourself before typing the total in.

Which denominator should I use?

Whichever one your platform reports alongside the post, so the two numbers came from the same measurement window. Comparing a rate by reach on one post against a rate by followers on another is not a fair comparison even though both are called an engagement rate.
