How Instagram counts a post

Instagram accepts 2,200 characters in the body of one post, measured in characters as a reader would count them, so an emoji or an accented letter costs one. This page applies the same rule our connector applies before it sends a post.

A link costs exactly the characters it occupies, so a long URL costs more of the ceiling than a short one.

How does Instagram count a character?

By grapheme, which is the unit a reader means by a character. An emoji, a flag and a letter carrying a separate accent mark each cost one. This page measures with the browser segmenter and then applies the Instagram rule on top.

Do links count against the Instagram limit?

Yes, at their real length. A URL costs the characters it occupies, the same as any other text.
