How X counts a post
X accepts 280 characters in the body of one post, measured in a weighted unit, where most alphabetic scripts cost one per character while CJK characters and emoji cost two. This page applies the same rule our connector applies before it sends a post.
Links are the part people get wrong. X rewrites every URL to a fixed width, so one link costs 23 characters whatever the real URL length is, and shortening a URL before you paste it saves nothing.

How does X count a character?
By a weighted count. Most alphabetic scripts cost one per character, Latin, Cyrillic and Arabic among them. CJK characters and most emoji cost two. This page measures with the browser segmenter and then applies the X rule on top.
Do links count against the X limit?
Yes, at a flat rate. Every URL is rewritten to the platform shortener, so each link costs 23 characters of the ceiling however long it was when you pasted it.
